Do's and Don'ts For a Successful Recovery After Hip Replacement Surgery
The Recovery process after hip replacement is a long journey and there are various dos and don'ts which you can follow to have a fast and safe recovery.
Following are some of the safety tips that you can follow to ensure faster recovery:
You Should Remove All The Clutter and Free up as Much Space as Possible
You can do this by keeping the stairs free of any objects and also removing small rugs and wires that can come in your way while walking.
Be mindful of your sleeping position
While lying down you should try to place a pillow between your knees to minimize the twisting. This will help you keep your knees in one straight direction.
Keep Your Walking Area Safe
You should keep your hallways and stairways always well lit to avoid any accidents.
Apply Ice to the Operated Area For Pain Relief
You should keep your legs elevated. Icing should be done as it helps in relieving post-operative pain. Apply ice packs or ice wrapped in towels, don't apply ice directly to the skin.
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy plays a very important role in rehabilitation after surgery. Regular physiotherapy sessions as suggested by your doctor should be followed with diligence.
Following are some common things to avoid after hip replacement surgery:
Don’t Resist Getting up and Moving Around
Moving around and staying a little active helps prevent blood clots and also enhances the healing process.
Don’t Bend at the Waist More Than 90 Degrees
This means that you should avoid doing activities like tying your shoes, sitting in a low chair, or any such activity that requires bending at the waist. This is important to avoid the chances of dislocating the new hip.
Don’t Lift Your Knees Past Your Hips
You should also avoid raising your knees higher than your hips to avoid dislocation of the new hip.
Don't Cross Your Leg While Sitting
Try to keep your legs straight such that your toes are pointing up towards the ceiling. You should avoid crossing your legs while sitting or lying down. After a total hip replacement surgery, you should not roll the operated side leg inward or outward.
Don’t Twist or Pivot at the Hip
You should always try to keep your chest and hips pointing in the same direction.
Don’t Rotate Your Feet too Far Inward Or Outward
Your toes and feet should be pointing in the same direction as your hips.
Don't Consume Alcohol and Quit Smoking
Smoking and alcohol consumption should be avoided as it delays the healing process. It is also known to reduce immunity and overall health.
Don’t Drive Until You are Cleared by Your Doctor
Driving after hip replacement is different for everyone. Take advice from your doctor before you start driving again.
Don’t Rush The Healing Process
The healing process takes time. Follow the doctor's advice for a faster and safe recovery.
